Traditional Christmas in Vienna


Every year from mid-November until Christmas, the Austrian capital is enveloped in a Christmas atmosphere. The magic of Christmas can be seen on almost every corner. Christmas candy, hot punch, and the pleasant aroma of roasted almonds waft through the air. The Christmas mood is also brought to the city by the traditional markets and by the residents who prepare colorful and tasteful lights and decorations.

During Advent, the Rathausplatz is filled with a Christmas atmosphere with 150 stalls. The markets sell all kinds of decorations, traditional ornaments, arts and crafts, sweets, snacks, and a variety of warming drinks. The trees in the plaza and City Hall Park glow with lights and surround a romantic skating rink where visitors can rent skates and go skating. The majestic Christmas tree and beautiful light installations in the park are an integral part of the event. The Christmas Village on Maria Theresa Square features as many as 70 stalls. Here, visitors can listen to live Christmas carols performed by choirs and bands. In the heart of the city lies the Old Vienna, which began in 1772 in Freyung. At the charming stalls, visitors can buy high-quality, traditional handicrafts such as glass ornaments, nativity scenes, etc.

Schönbrunn Palace also hosts a Christmas market in the courtyard. The atmosphere is filled with the romantic atmosphere of Christmas. After Christmas, the market turns into a New Year\’s market. Every year, visitors can admire the choirs, handmade crafts and the Christmas decorations of the castle itself. An impressive baroque backdrop awaits visitors at Belvedere Castle. In the park of the Belvedere Castle, an Advent market is held, offering delicious delicacies. In Charles Square, a variety of Christmas stalls and a rich arts program await. The State Opera House is also in the Christmas mood, with stalls selling gingerbread, cheese, punch, mulled wine, and more. Finally, don\’t miss the Winter Market on the Giant Ferris Wheel, which offers a panoramic view of Vienna\’s beautiful Christmas.
